New Challenges and Lessons - Day 3

On December 31, 2014 I set the goal of doing my 9 Daily Health Practices every day during January 2015. Day 3 had its challenges and lessons.

I started my day with a Qi Gong session. I have found Qi Gong to be my favorite practice to do as soon as I wake up in the morning. The slow movements allow for the joints to gently open up as the body warms up. I usually try to practice Qi Gong for an hour so that I can have enough time to move through all the basic exercises. This time I had to keep it shorter to meet up for a hike with my friends from the Foundation Training Team. Below is a picture of them. From left to right, Dr. Eric Goodman, Dr. Dustin DeRyke and Mr. Move Man (Brian King).

We went to a challenging trail in Santa Barbara called Romero Canyon Trail and we ran for a good portion of the hike. We were hiking for almost 3 hours! I didn’t bring my phone on the hike to reduce weight and distractions. I couldn’t take a picture but here is a photo of the view from the top of the hike. Photo by RunnersWorld.com

After the hike we ate a big meal and relaxed in Carpinteria. During this time I got Mr. Move Man, a Master Foundation Training Instructor to take me through a detail-oriented Foundation Training class and in exchanged I practiced some cranial sacral therapy and bodywork on him. A win-win trade.

We spent most of the afternoon catching up and we ended up watching a movie called “Back to the Future”. After that I had to drive to teach a couple Foundation Training classes in Los Angeles. I sang and did my breath work practice on the drive to LA but by the time I arrived home I was too tired to do anything else and headed straight to bed.

I ended up missing my meditation, creative writing, self-massage and yoga practices but in exchange I got to spend time with a group of very dear friends who I had not seen in a while. I also got to practice massage on a couple of people and although that does not count as part of my assignment I do believe that selfless service is also Self-care. Add 3 hours of hiking and we still have a very healthy day with plenty of sunlight, movement and joy.

The most challenging and inspiring part of my day was running up the trail. It certainly left me wanting for more. It had been a while since I had ran any long distances and I believe that 2015 will find me doing more of that.

When was the last time you went on a run? Maybe today you can get into it. If you are out of practice, start small, maybe jog around the block a couple of times and tomorrow you might do some more. As long as you are taking steps towards health you are moving in the right direction.

Not every day we get to do everything we want, but some days we get to do a lot of what we have been wanting to do. Today was one of those days for me and even thought I did not get to do each one of my practices like in Day 2 I know tomorrow I will have another chance. I look forward to it.

I hope you also have a chance to become healthier every day.

See you on Day 4!
